Together with the whole country, Long An joins hands to reduce plastic waste, convey and spread green lifestyle to the community with good practices, practical and effective models
For a green environment
Plastic waste often takes a long time to decompose, accumulates in the environment, clogs drainage systems, pollutes soil, water and air. The theme "Fighting plastic pollution" of World Environment Day - June 5 this year is not only a warning but also a strong call to action from the United Nations to all countries, localities, organizations, businesses and people around the world.
This is an opportunity to review development models, consumption habits, production methods and waste management. From there, we can switch to a circular economic model, green growth and especially reduce dependence on disposable plastics.
In Long An, according to statistics, the volume of domestic solid waste collected and transported for treatment in urban areas is about 780-820 tons/day, of which plastic waste accounts for about 16%. According to forecasts from the functional sector, by 2030, the average volume of domestic solid waste generated will be about 1,100 tons/day. This amount is and will be a burden for existing facilities related to waste management and treatment, mainly plastic waste.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - Nguyen Tan Thuan, implementing the direction of the Government and related ministries and branches, the province has resolutely directed and implemented many solutions to reduce plastic waste. Waste classification at source is one of the effective solutions that the province is piloting as a basis for replication. Not only is it environmentally meaningful, but waste classification at source also helps increase recycled materials, bringing many economic benefits, forming a green, circular economy and sustainable development.
“Through the guidance of the relevant authorities, we know how to classify waste, especially plastic waste, which is fully utilized, contributing to significantly reducing the amount of household waste. More importantly, we understand the importance of waste classification, changing our habits and behaviors, and being conscious of environmental protection.” - Mr. Nguyen Huu Toan (Vinh Hung town, Vinh Hung district) shared.
Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Hung district - Tran Van Tai said: Over the implementation period, waste classification has been responded to and actively participated by people. This has greatly contributed to the collection and treatment of waste, especially the amount of plastic waste that is thoroughly collected, limiting the risk of environmental pollution. In addition to disseminating and popularizing relevant regulations, the district has expanded the practice of waste classification at source, aiming for a green, clean, and beautiful lifestyle throughout the area.

In Can Giuoc district, the locality has launched many suitable models and methods, which have been actively responded to and implemented by the people, contributing to reducing and limiting the negative impacts of plastic waste.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai (Can Giuoc town, Can Giuoc district), people clearly understand the role and responsibility in the fight against plastic waste. "We participate in models launched by the locality, classify waste, plant trees, etc to build a green, clean environment, spread positive messages related to environmental protection to the community" - Ms. Hai said.
Each person contributes a little to create big results
In the Action Month for the Environment, many localities organized a campaign to clean up and plant trees to spread a green, clean, beautiful, and environmentally friendly lifestyle
According to statistics from Can Giuoc, the amount of waste generated in the district is about 110 tons per day. Before launching the Action Month for the Environment and combating plastic waste in the area, the amount of plastic waste accounted for about 18-20%. Now the amount has decreased to about 13-15%.
Chairman of Can Giuoc District People's Committee - Nguyen Anh Duc informed: In recent years, the district has been implementing many environmental protection solutions, initially achieving encouraging results: Collecting over 90% of household waste, classifying waste at source has been piloted, propaganda work has been promoted,...
The locality continues to concretize the fight against plastic pollution through practical actions. In particular, the district closely coordinates with provincial departments and branches to organize activities, creating a deep and wide spread; promoting propaganda to change behavior in reducing plastic waste, maintaining environmental hygiene from the smallest actions such as promoting waste classification models, recycling plastic waste, using environmentally friendly products to replace plastic products, launching environmental sanitation campaigns, planting trees, dredging rivers, canals, ditches, urban beautification, etc.
It can be said that, up to now, the series of activities in the Month of Action for the Environment in the province have achieved many practical results. The activity has promptly conveyed the message of environmental protection, further promoting public awareness in the rational use of natural resources.
Preventing and combating plastic waste, mobilizing and calling on the community to change their behavior and habits of using plastic products and disposable nylon bags, contributing to reducing environmental pollution, protecting human health and the ecosystem. From there, changing from awareness to specific actions to limit the use of plastic and nylon products, replacing them with environmentally friendly products, towards a greener and cleaner lifestyle.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam emphasized: Responding to World Environment Day and the Action Month for the Environment is an opportunity to look back and review our way of life today, which is consuming and wasting too many resources and destroying the environment. This is also an opportunity to call on individuals in the community to change their awareness, work together to protect the environment, contributing to mitigating and adapting to climate change.
In the work of environmental protection, if each person contributes a small part of their efforts, we can create great strength to protect the environment, to better our life./.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam called on every individual, every organization, unit inside and outside the province to join hands in environmental protection, aiming to use green, environmentally friendly products to reduce emissions, and minimize human impacts on the ecosystem through practical actions.
In particular, provincial and local departments, branches, socio-political organizations must be aware of, thoroughly understand and disseminate the Law on Environmental Protection to all individuals, organizations and communities; further strengthen state management of the environment, especially in monitoring and handling plastic waste; focus on solutions to promote waste classification at source, build effective and environmentally friendly models of collecting and recycling plastic waste.
Vietnam Fatherland Front and socio-political organizations will promote movements and campaigns for the whole population to protect the environment, specifically: Organize the "No Disposable Plastic" Day; encourage the application of no plastic model in supermarkets, traditional markets, restaurants, offices, schools; launch the movement "All people participate in fighting plastic waste", "Green Sunday", "Turning waste into money", etc. to raise awareness and spread practical actions to each person and each household.
The province promotes the process of innovation in production technology, sustainable consumption, encourages businesses to use recycled materials and biological materials to replace virgin plastic; builds mechanisms and policies to develop a circular economic ecosystem in the plastics and packaging industry; has strict sanctions for violations of environmental protection, especially the act of dumping plastic waste into the environment; strengthens the inspection, examination and supervision of the implementation of environmental protection regulations.
At the same time, the province promotes propaganda and education to raise public awareness, especially among students, union members, and youth - the core force of the future, to turn "saying no to disposable plastic" into a habit of living beautifully, greenly and responsibly.
In addition, the province encourages and replicates effective initiatives, community models, and green business models, strengthens international cooperation, and mobilizes financial, technological, and technical resources to deploy modern and effective solutions for treating recycled plastic waste.
