Food and beverages are in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) category. For many years, this has always been one of the important economic sectors with great potential for development, according to the Vietnam Report 2020.
The food and beverage market's growth rate is forecasted to reach from 5-6 percent annually in 2020-2025.
Despite suffering negative impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, the food and beverage industry in Vietnam also has many strong growth opportunities. At present, more and more consumers pay attention to nutritional foods of plant origin, organic foods or food with healthy ingredients.
A survey conducted by Vietnam Report at the end of 2020 showed due to COVID-19, half of customers have spent more on foods boosting their immune system and clean foods. Meanwhile, 63.7 percent of customers have cut spending on alcohol and beer. Therefore, businesses in this industry must adjust their production to suit demand.
Food businesses have to increase their production capacity by about 30 percent, while beverage businesses must reduce their production to lower than 80 percent compared to before the pandemic.
Besides that, Vu Dang Vinh, general director of the Vietnam Assessment Report Joint Stock Company, said COVID-19 has forced nearly 70 percent of food and beverage businesses to focus on the digital transformation for survival and development, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
Many businesses have built modern technology processes in production and management. Food and beverage companies have also sped up investment activities to renovate the distribution system and adjust the proportion between traditional and modern trading channels. They develop applications to enhance the customer experience when shopping and innovate packaging design, eco-branding and product line development.
Nguyen Dang Quang, chairman of Masan Group, said the COVID-19 pandemic is a good opportunity to promote e-commerce.
The group is building plans to attract more and more people to online shopping, he said.
Vinh said food and beverage businesses need to focus on strategies such as revenue growth, market development, promotion of research and improving product quality. They should also diversify supply sources with priority for domestic suppliers and develop online distribution channels on e-commerce platforms.
According to experts in the food and beverage industry, the stable macroeconomy and commitments in free trade agreements signed between Vietnam and its partners such as the European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) would bring export opportunities and more foreign investment. They would promote the transfer of technology and technological advancement in the industry.
Along with that, the food and beverage companies need to improve their competitiveness and increase investment in infrastructure systems and modernisation of production processes and corporate governance./.

|2021 GDP growth may reach 6.72 percent in best-case scenario: Conference||2021 GDP growth may reach 6.72 percent in best-case scenario: Conference|
Vietnam’s economic growth is projected at 6.17 percent in 2021 in a base-line scenario and may even reach 6.72 percent in the best-case scenario, heard a conference held in Hanoi on January 20.
An overview of the conference (Photo: VNA)
Co-hosted by the UN Development Programme and the Ministry of Planning and Investment's National Centre for Socio-economic Information and Forecasting (NCIF), the "Vietnam's Economy in the Medium Term 2021 - 2025: Recovery and Growth Accelerates" conference brought together a large number of economists, business leaders, and representatives of international organisations and business associations to discuss the outlook for Vietnam's economy over the next five years and the actions needed to turn the expected rebound from COVID-19 into a sustainable economic recovery.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong said the pandemic has presented both challenges and opportunities to Vietnam during the 2021-2025 period.
There have been many emerging trends reshaping international financial flows, trade, and investment, he noted, adding that the pandemic has also triggered a shift in global supply chains, creating challenges and opportunities for any economic rebound in the long run.
It is especially significant for the country to take advantage of new opportunities to revive its economy this year and create breakthroughs over the next five years in order to meet the goals set by the Party and the State, he said.
UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam Caitlin Wiesen said Vietnam was one of only a few countries in the world to post GDP growth in 2020, of 2.91 percent, and for the first time it was ranked by the UNDP as among the High Human Development Group, with growth of 46 percent in its Human Development Index (HDI) during the 1990-2019 period, one of the most rapid transitions to high human development in history.
She went on to say that Vietnam will launch a new five-year Socio-Economic Development Plan and ten-year Socio-Economic Development Strategy that will establish a broad vision for economic recovery in the short term, in the context of continuing global uncertainty.
The strategic policy choices Vietnam makes will define its ability to turn the COVID-19 rebound into a bold recovery in 2021 and beyond. Equally, it will determine the ability of the country to accelerate policies to achieve the medium-term aspirations of realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and attaining high-middle income country status by 2030, she added.
Two scenarios for Vietnam's economic growth this year were introduced at the conference. According to NCIF Deputy Director Dr Dang Duc Anh, the base-line scenario forecasts the economy to grow at about 6.17 percent and CPI to stand at 3.8 percent if the global economy rebounds and COVID-19 is gradually brought under control.
In the best-case scenario, GDP growth will reach 6.72 percent and CPI around 4.2 percent if the global economy recovers at a pace faster than expected./.

On March 29, 2019, the Provincial Standing Committee issued the Conclusion No. 720-KL/TU (referred to as Conclusion 720) on compensation, site clearance, and resettlement in districts of Duc Hoa, Ben Luc , Can Duoc, Can Giuoc, Thu Thua, Tan Tru and Tan An City. Since Conclusion 720, localities have coordinated and focused on directing the implementation so this work has had more positive changes than before.
In Ben Luc district, the work of compensation, site clearance and resettlement has been drastically focused on by the district, especially after the conclusion of the Executive Committee of the Provincial Party Committee No.720. This work initially achieved some positive results. Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen, living in Long Hiep commune, Ben Luc district, shared: "My family has been acquired land to build Provincial Road 833B. At first, we were quite hesitant and worried. However, after listening to the local propaganda, explaining the importance of the work to the local development, the family quickly handed over the site to construct the road. Now that the route has been completed, put into use, people have a convenient way to trade and travel, with the new local appearance, we feel excited".

Ms. Tran Thi Hang said: "My family has been acquired land for the project of Duc Hoa I Industrial Park (in Duc Hoa Dong commune, Duc Hoa district), so I hand over the site for the project. The district proposes that the province should support and guide the district on relevant mechanisms and policies, deploy compensation unit prices, improve the quality of the team specializing in site clearance "- Mr. Le Truong Chinh added.

Long An continues to promote compensation, site clearance and resettlement
Although the work of compensation, site clearance and resettlement in the area initially achieved many positive results, Can Giuoc still faces certain difficulties and problems such as land price volatility; some policies on compensation, land acquisition, resettlement have not received high consensus from the people; In many cases, land users have not been found; Many investors lack coordination in implementation; Some projects are delayed their progress. The district continues to strengthen communication and mobilize people to comply with the policy; coordinating with relevant departments, agencies to remove difficulties; continue to review and inspect extended projects. At the same time, it is proposed to the province to consider, adjust and supplement mechanisms and policies to support people whose land is acquired, to have solutions to urge or recover if the investor is weak.
Director of Department of Natural Resources and Environment - Vo Minh Thanh informed: As soon as there was Conclusion 720 of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, the Department focused on coordinating with departments, branches and localities to organize the implementation. This work has had many positive changes over the past time.
Every month, the Department synthesizes and reports to the Provincial People's Committee on the results of compensation, land clearance and resettlement in localities. However, the work of compensation, land clearance, resettlement still exists and has certain limitations. In order to focus on effectively implementing this work, the Department sends documents to the District People's Committee to publicize a panel of projects implemented in the area about information such as investor, diagram, target scale, implementation progress in order for the compensation work to be favorable, open and transparent as well as enhancing the investor's responsibility, creating consensus and continuity of the people.

|Vietnam’s growth outlook to depend on authorities’ response to new outbreak: WB||Vietnam’s growth outlook to depend on authorities’ response to new outbreak: WB|
Vietnam’s growth prospects will depend on how well and how quickly the authorities will bring the new coronavirus outbreak under control and how quickly international and national vaccinations will proceed, according to the World Bank (WB).
The fibre production line of the Phu Tho Textile Co. Ltd (Photo: VNA)
In its Vietnam Macro Monitoring report issued earlier this month, the WB said January's industrial production index jumped by 24.5 percent year on year, the highest growth rate since the beginning of 2019. Merchandise exports and imports respectively grew 51.8 percent and 41.8 percent from the same period last year.
The preliminary January goods trade surplus is estimated at 1.1 billion USD. Exports to the US and China continued the robust growth of 2020 while those to the EU, ASEAN, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) bounced back strongly. Similarly, imports from the RoK, ASEAN and the US joined those from China, Japan and the EU to stay in expansionary territory.
In the first month of 2021, the Government spent a total of 99.6 trillion VND, which is slightly, 1 percent, higher than a year ago. Public investment reached 15 trillion VND, making the disbursement rate of 3.25 percent.
However, the WB added, while Vietnam's economy has been extremely resilient to the COVID-19 crisis, preliminary results from the COVID-19 World Bank high frequency household survey of January show that almost half of households still reported lower household income than the year before. About 9 percent of households took loans and 15 percent reduced their consumption.
If persistent, this prudent behaviour will negatively affect aggregate domestic demand in the future, according to the bank.
It held that growth prospects for 2021 will be affected by how well and how quickly the authorities will bring the new outbreak under control and how quickly international and national vaccinations will proceed.
If the crisis lingers, the authorities may consider further monetary and fiscal support. Yet, special attention will have to be given to the fiscal space, the health of the financial sector and possible social effects as lasting loss of income among some households may create new inequalities and tensions, the report noted.
Jacques Morisset, WB Lead Economist for Vietnam, said the WB expects with many positive signs like the considerable progress in vaccine development and gradually resumed trading activities, the country can obtain growth of 6 percent in 2021./.

|Efficience of linking production - consumption lemon GlobalGAP||Efficience of linking production - consumption lemon GlobalGAP|
To help farmers change production methods, switch from traditional farming to the application of advanced science - technology, increase value, increase the competitiveness of agricultural products and create stable output for agricultural product, and so on is the effect from the linkage between GlobalGAP's lemon production and consumption in recent years.
Instead of growing lemons in the traditional way, with little application of science and technology like many other local farmers, Huynh Hau Tien, who lives in Tan Thanh commune, Thu Thua district of Long An province, strongly associates with the Can Tho Fruit Republic One Member Limited Company to produce lemons following GlobalGAP standards for export to the European market right from the early days of converting 10 hectares of inefficient sugarcane land to growing lemons. Accordingly, on an area of 10 hectares of land to grow lemon, Mr. Tien strictly adheres to the global good agricultural practice from selecting seeds, planting, caring to harvest. In particular, he paid special attention to applying sparse planting techniques, minimizing the use of fertilizers, chemical drugs, instead increasing the use of biological drugs and organic fertilizers, and so on, contributing to to ensure that lemons do not have residues of fertilizers, pesticides, qualified and quality exported to the European market - one of the fastidious markets of the world.
Currently, the Can Tho Fruit Republic One Member Limited Company is associating with purchasing more than 1,000 hectares of lemons, of which 200 hectares are produced in the direction of GlobalGap, the rest are produced under the TFA process
Thanks to the application of scientific and technological advances according to the GlobalGAP production standard, Tien's lemon garden helps to reduce pests, diseases, and grow well, its yield is 25 tons per hectare per year, 5 tons per hectare per year higher than normal planting. When applying scientific and technological progress according to GlobalGAP production standards also prolongs the life span of lemon trees to 10 years; at the same time, change farmers' thinking of production. Mr. Tien said: "Growing lemons according to GlobalGap standards, on average per hectare, I only plant 450 trees (normal planting is 600-700 trees); The company sent a team of engineers to guide and take care of the lemon garden regularly and support the construction of warehouses, pits for treating lemons and diseases, etc. During the integration period, to be stable on agricultural output, in which having lemon trees requires farmers to put quality, safety and food hygiene first. Therefore, production according to GlobalGAP standards is a must-to-do for farmers now and in the future".
Being an "unprofessional person" converted from sugarcane land for low productivity and low profit to growing lemon, Mr. Le Van Dang, living in Tan Thanh commune, Thu Thua district, could not be surprised, not even dare to invest much. However, since signing a contract with the Can Tho Fruit Republic One Member Limited Company, he has become a good farmer in applying science and technology in lemon production. Looking at Mr. Dang's lemon garden, the fruit is lush, green and smooth, no trace of pests, diseases, branches, dry branches, even spoiled fruit, rotten fruit, and so on proves this effectiveness.
Mr. Huynh Hau Tien plants 10 hectares of lemons in the direction of GlobalGAP, contributing to creating clean products and increasing competitiveness in the market
Mr. Dang shared: "After the combination, the company's officers accompany in all production stages, especially the output of stable products, selling prices higher than the market from 3,000-4,000 VND per kilo, increasing profits. 15-20 percent more than before. In addition, my family also strongly converted the remaining ineffective sugarcane growing area to lemon cultivation. Now, family economy is stable, life is constantly improving, all thanks to the lemon trees".
Currently, the area of production and consumption of lemons according to GlobalGAP standards between Long An farmers and the Can Tho Fruit Republic One Member Limited Company is about 200 hectares. By the end of 2021, this area will increase to 260 hectares and continue to increase rapidly in the near future. Head of The Fruit Republic Can Tho Co., Ltd - Ho Vu Khanh information: "Currently, the associated company purchases more than 1,000 hectares of lemons, of which 200 hectares are produced in the direction of GlobalGap, the rest are produced according to TFA process. It is expected that every year, the company will increase 30 percent more lemon planting area in the direction of GlobalGap in Long An. Through the linkage between the company and farmers, the company will contribute to changing the thinking of production for farmers, towards clean production, avoiding dependence on the Chinese market, and instead targeting the European market. After a time of connecting, all people participating in the association have well observed the production process of the company, especially no farmer has left the link".
It can be seen that the linkage model between the Can Tho Fruit Republic One Member Limited Company and lemon farmers in the province is bringing about many effects and potentials, contributing to the province's development of the model associated with the Project applying technology in production of lemon trees, promoting rapid and sustainable development of local agricultural products./.
