Vietnam and Australia are both members of at least three free trade agreements, namely ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), CPTPP and the Regional Economic Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
According to data of the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, last year, two-way trade between Vietnam and Australia hit 12.4 billion USD for the first time, up more than 49 percent compared with that of 2020. The value of shipments to Australia reached more than 4.45 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 23 percent. Vietnam spent nearly 8 billion USD in importing goods from Australia, up nearly 70 percent against 2020's figure.
Vietnam's exports to Australia are growing strongly, reaching 1.38 billion USD in the first quarter of 2022, a surge of 32.36 percent against the same period last year.
Sharp increases were seen in Vietnam's export of various agricultural and industrial products to Australia, for example 84 percent in coffee, 51 percent in aquatic products, 41 percent in rubber, and 26 percent in electric cable. Notably, the shipments of iron and steel skyrocketed by more than 500 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, the country is buying more and more essential materials from Australia, such as coal, iron ore, metals, cotton, wheat, and animal feed. In particular, Vietnam's import value of coal from Australia in Q1 surged 176 percent year on year and that of cotton shot up 333 percent.
The CPTPP also serves as momentum for bilateral cooperation in terms of investment. By the end of last year, there were about 550 Australian investment projects in Vietnam with a total value of nearly 2 billion USD, ranking 19th among foreign investors in the country.
Graham Kinder, Vice Chairman of the Australia-Vietnam Business Council, was quoted by the newspaper as saying that Australian companies see many investment opportunities in Vietnam in the fields of trade, investment, education and transport that are Australia's strengths, thus they are keen to promote their investments in Vietnam. Similarly, Vietnamese enterprises can expand their investment and business operation in areas of their strength in Australian states and localities.
It is now the right time for businesses of both countries to take advantage of opportunities for cooperation in the post-pandemic period as borders have been reopened and both governments seek to promote investment activities, he said./.

|Health Ministry yet to consider COVID-19 endemic disease||Health Ministry yet to consider COVID-19 endemic disease|
The Ministry of Health has proposed considering COVID-19 a Group A infectious disease, not an endemic disease in its latest draft on COVID-19 prevention and control measures in the new situation.
Illustrative photo (Source: VNA)
Per the draft, Vietnam is still in the transition period between pandemic prevention and sustainable management.
Regarding the reason why COVID-19 has not been considered an endemic disease in Vietnam yet, the Ministry of Health said that most countries in the world are in a state of unstable cases and deaths, with an erratic increase and decrease trend when new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus appear. At the same time, acquired immunity (due to vaccines and infection) has not been stable for a long time and decreases over time.
As a result, the application of epidemic prevention and control measures should be flexible and gradually moves towards the "new normal".
The announcement of the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam may be considered when the World Health Organisation declares the end of the pandemic or public health event of concern globally; and when the country's situation continues to be well controlled./.

|Food exporters urged to evolve to tap into large markets||Food exporters urged to evolve to tap into large markets|
There remains untapped potential for Vietnam's exports of agricultural and food products to major markets in Asia, Europe and America, but it is important for Vietnamese enterprises to improve the quality of their products, sharpen their competitiveness, and better grasp current international consumption trends, experts have said.

Vu Anh Son, a Vietnamese Trade Counselor in France, told vnbusiness that he failed to find any Vietnamese-branded cashew products in supermarket chains and hypermarkets in France, even though Vietnam's cashew now accounts for 50 percent of the French market.
This unsatisfactory performance is attributable to the limited competitive capabilities of domestic enterprises and their focus on exporting or wholesaling agricultural and food products instead of developing brands to increase the added value of their food products.
According to Son, increasing the added value of agricultural and food items will help strengthen the competitiveness of Vietnamese firms striving to export. They should also pay attention to current food consumption trends in imported markets, Son suggested.
Despite good agricultural and food products the firms can offer for export, they still have insufficient research and understanding about approaching export markets and current food consumption trends in large markets such as Asia and Europe, Son added.
For example, currently, European customers have a great demand for nutritious and healthy snacks with a stable and sustainable supply. That will open up opportunities for Vietnamese companies if they can grasp this consumption trend and then diversify their products to meet that demand, Son said.
In addition, improving product quality remains a must, experts said.
Nguyen Truong Thinh from Luong Quoi Coconut Co in Ben Tre province agreed. He said product quality is among the top concerns of international customers.
As consumer demand increases, they require the higher quality of products. Thus, local firms, especially those in the agricultural and food processing sectors, need to apply advanced technologies in their production to ensure the best quality of their products to meet the needs of international customers, he told vnbusiness.
During the first five months of 2022, the country's export value of main agricultural products surpassed 9.4 billion USD, up 10.4 percent, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
Among products and product groups posting a turnover of over $1 billion were coffee, rice, cashew nuts, fruits and vegetables.
MARD said that it has stepped up bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities. Its units have focused on negotiating and promoting the export of passion fruit and grapefruit to Australia; rambutan, star apple, custard apple, cassava slices, sugar and milk to Thailand; lemon and grapefruit to New Zealand, and bird's nest, feather products and fish meal to China.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that his ministry would review and adjust policies to encourage and support businesses to invest in agriculture and develop products in accordance with international standards and practices to serve the export of agricultural products better.
Hoan stressed the need to strictly comply with regulations related to labelling, traceability, geographical indications, quarantine, packaging, quality and types of agricultural products, and business codes.
The ministry will maintain negotiations to remove barriers and increase the export of additional agricultural products to major and potential markets, such as durian, birds' nest, passion fruit, avocado, grapefruit and coconut to China; longan, grapefruit, and passion fruit to Japan; and shrimp, grapefruit, litchi, rambutan, processed poultry and cattle meat to the Republic of Korea.
It is important to invest more in improving the processing and preservation to increase the added value of products.
The ministry will maintain effective implementation of free trade agreements signed with other countries and regions over the world, as well as the coordinate with Vietnamese embassies and trade and agriculture offices to collect and provide information about foreign markets and tastes for local businesses, and help them boost trade promotion, Hoan said./.

According to the ministry, the formulation of the decree aims to create a complete and unified legal framework on mechanisms and policies encouraging the development of the farm economy. This would contribute to improving management efficiency and uniformity in farm economic management, and remove difficulties in the operation of farms to create favourable conditions for their development in accordance with legal provisions, including those related to land, construction, access to credit sources, science and technology application and non-agricultural activities.
It is expected to create conditions for owners to develop their farms and invest in expanding the development of large-scale production, thus contributing to promoting the transformation of agricultural and rural economic structure and improving the living standards of farmers.

Vietnam currently has 19,667 farms that meet criteria set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, including 4,325 cultivation farms, 12,013 husbandry, 129 forestry, and 1,267 aquaculture facilities.
The farms provide a large amount of agricultural product value to the market and contribute greatly to the national economy.
The farm economy has promoted the exploitation of bare land, hills and degraded land for agricultural, forestry and aquatic production, contributing to improving land use efficiency, especially in the midlands, mountainous and coastal areas, and bettering the ecological environment.
However, at present, farms in Vietnam are developing spontaneously with small production scale and low economic efficiency./.

|Building production linking chain, increasing people's income||Building production linking chain, increasing people's income|
Focusing on product quality, focusing on building a stable raw material area, linking and cooperating in production is an inevitable direction for sustainable agricultural development, thereby, it contributes to increasing income for people.
Mr. Pham Dinh Nguyen applies high technology to raising cows to bring high economic efficiency
Applying high technology to production
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh, in order to promote agricultural development in the direction of chain-linked production, the province's agriculture sector has deployed and implemented many programs, schemes and projects such as the Project on developing hi-tech application agriculture associated with restructuring the Agriculture sector, policies to encourage the development of cooperation and association in producing and consuming agricultural products, supporting cooperatives, cooperative groups to build projects to develop production links along the value chain, associated with consuming agricultural products, etc.
In addition, the Department of ARD is also interested in calling and creating conditions for enterprises to link production and consumption of agricultural products in the area. Thereby, it contributes to ensuring the output of products, farmers feel secure in production. In response to the province's efforts, many farmers changed their production methods. As of August 31, 2021, the province has 202 agricultural cooperatives (an increase of 2 cooperatives compared to December 31, 2020), of which 177 are operating. Total charter capital is over 159.2 billion VND with 4,540 members.
Mr. Pham Dinh Nguyen (My Thanh Bac commune, Duc Hue district) said that his family has just sold 8 fattened cows and earned over 400 million VND. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, the market price fluctuated a lot. The selling price of cows decreased by 2,000 VND per kilo compared to the normal time, but people still made a good profit. Currently, Mr. Nguyen's cow farm has 19 cows left. In 2015, he started raising cows according to the traditional method. By 2017, he participated in the hi-tech pilot model of feeding cows in My Thanh Bac commune. Accordingly, he invested in building a barn, buying machinery, changing breeds, diversifying feed for cows, etc. If it took 7-8 months to raise fattening cows to sell before, now it only takes Mr. Nguyen about 3-4 months.
About 60 kilometers from Mr. Nguyen's cow farm, is 0.5 hectare of land for growing vegetables of Mrs. Le Thi Hong (hamlet 5, My Thanh commune, Thu Thua district). Realizing the benefits of applying scientific and technical advances to production, Ms. Hong joined My Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, Thu Thua District and was instructed in the sowing schedule of vegetables, production methods and implementation in accordance with VietGAP standards. "The cooperative is committed to buy the output for vegetables, so farmers can feel safe. In the past time, the cooperative always offers a committed price when consuming, but it depends on the time, the purchase level will increase or decrease. In the past few months, due to the impact of the epidemic, consumption has been lower than before", said Ms. Hong.

Growing dragon fruit trees for 15 years, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi is an experienced member of Duong Xuan Dragon Fruit Cooperative (Duong Xuan Hoi commune, Chau Thanh district). He planted nearly 2 hectares of red flesh dragon fruit. Comparing the production process with the past, Mr. Hoi commented: "Today, farmers receive advanced technology to help improve product value and save costs for irrigation, fertilizer, labor, etc. Linking and cooperation in production is an inevitable direction for sustainable development.
Linking production with consumption
Established in 2018 with 16 members, Tay Hoa Cooperative (Binh Hoa Bac commune, Duc Hue district) currently has 32 members. In 2019, Tay Hoa Cooperative obtained VietGAP certification in beef cattle farming. Also in 2019, the cooperative was supported to build infrastructure with a total cost of nearly 589 million VND from the capital of the National Target Program on New-style Rural Construction. Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tay Hoa Cooperative - Nguyen Van Ninh shared: "Currently, the number of cows in the cooperative fluctuates around 200 heads. The application of high technology into livestock production helps farmers reduce labor, shorten the time to sell cows, and effectively link the consumption of cows without being forced low price.
According to Director of Dragon Fruit Cooperative Duong Xuan - Phan Thanh Son, the cooperative is operating with two services such as supplying agricultural materials and linking dragon fruit consumption. Currently, the cooperative has 115 members, an increase of 58 members compared to the beginning of the term. The total area of dragon fruit recognized by VietGAP is 66.3 hectares; the total area of dragon fruit registered for high-tech program is 380.55 hectares with 584 participating households (increasing by 39 households with 25.8 hectares compared to 2020).
"The cooperative strives by the end of 2021 to make a profile to replicate the VietGAP model by 22.6 hectares; mobilizes more farmers to join cooperatives. At the same time, the cooperative links the chain with Nafoods Group to consume products for its members and farmers; cooperates with many companies to supply fertilizers and plant protection drugs for people to use with quality original prices"- Mr. Son added.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of ARD - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh, besides creating stable incomes for people, building a good value chain will contribute to the development of agricultural production in the direction of commodity production, improving agricultural value and developing sustainable competitive advantages in products and categories; At the same time, it creates a clean and organic production environment, limiting pesticides, reducing waste in production, reducing emissions, etc.
"However, building a chain of production links faces many difficulties. In the coming time, in order to link production and product consumption effectively, many solutions need to be implemented synchronously. Accordingly, they focus on supporting and creating favorable conditions for administrative procedures when participating in joint investment; strengthen trade promotion activities; organize a conference to connect supply - demand and introduce safe agricultural products and safe food; building infrastructure in service of production; focus on building a centralized production model in combination with product consumption; encouraging farmers to develop hi-quality rice, vegetable and shrimp production areas, bio-secure, commodity-oriented livestock production, creating brands, especially OCOP products" - Ms. Khanh emphasized./.

|Cooperatives receive support to adopt e-commerce||Cooperatives receive support to adopt e-commerce|
E-commerce is widely considered an effective and sustainable solution to help cooperatives improve their competitiveness, and boost production and exports, but the number of cooperatives that have gone online remains modest, prompting the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA) to support them in this regard.
Tea products of Yen Bai province's Suoi Giang Cooperatives are on sale on Alibaba e-commerce platform . (Photo: VNA)
According to Nguyen Ngoc Bao, VCA president, the application of e-commerce plays an important role in the success of cooperatives, creating competitiveness in the market economy.
He cited the fact that Suoi Giang Cooperative in Yen Bai province signed a contract worth up to 2 billion VND (nearly 86,500 USD) to export tea to Japan through Alibaba as an example.
There are about 26,900 online stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The number of Facebook users is estimated at 22.5 million in rural areas and 23.5 million in urban areas. This provides an opportunity for cooperatives and cooperative groups across the country to build online stores.
Bui Van Mien, Director of Son Thuy Agricultural Service Cooperative in Hoa Binh province's Xuan Thuy Commune, said that following the success of last year's longan crop, it will continue to promote sales on e-commerce platforms to develop the product's value chain and reduce costs.
Luong Dinh Hung, Secretary of Nhu Co Commune's Youth Union and founder of the Nhu Co Youth Agricultural Cooperative in Bac Kan province, said the cooperative is focusing on exploiting the demand for shopping online to strengthen connections with customers and promote its products.
Sales on e-commerce platforms has helped the cooperative collect customers' information, and cuts costs for renting warehouses or shops, he said.
However, a lack of IT knowhow is hindering cooperatives from putting their products online.
Do Nhan Dao, Chairman of the Yen Bai province Union of Cooperatives Alliance, said the ratio of IT proficient cooperatives that are capable of putting products on e-commerce platforms is low.
In addition, the number of young staff with good IT skills accounts for a very small percentage, he said, adding that some cooperatives do not have computers or devices connected to the internet.
Pham Xuan Thuy, director of Tan Hoang Tra Cooperatives in Thai Nguyen province, shared Dao's view, saying despite the fact that his cooperative has a raw material area that meets VietGAP (Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices) standards as well as invests in processing and design, products are still sold via the traditional method because most of its members lack IT skills.

In order to make effective use of e-commerce, experts said cooperatives should clearly define their markets, customers and quality standards that can be satisfied, then take steps towards online trade promotions.
The sale of products online is necessary, but it is essential for them to promote multi-channel sales, especially on cross-border e-commerce platforms instead of selling on one fanpage or personal Facebook page.
Bao said the VCA will develop a training programme on trade promotion and e-commerce to support cooperatives, adding there will be a combination between face-to-face and online training./.

Food and beverages are in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) category. For many years, this has always been one of the important economic sectors with great potential for development, according to the Vietnam Report 2020.
The food and beverage market's growth rate is forecasted to reach from 5-6 percent annually in 2020-2025.
Despite suffering negative impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, the food and beverage industry in Vietnam also has many strong growth opportunities. At present, more and more consumers pay attention to nutritional foods of plant origin, organic foods or food with healthy ingredients.
A survey conducted by Vietnam Report at the end of 2020 showed due to COVID-19, half of customers have spent more on foods boosting their immune system and clean foods. Meanwhile, 63.7 percent of customers have cut spending on alcohol and beer. Therefore, businesses in this industry must adjust their production to suit demand.
Food businesses have to increase their production capacity by about 30 percent, while beverage businesses must reduce their production to lower than 80 percent compared to before the pandemic.
Besides that, Vu Dang Vinh, general director of the Vietnam Assessment Report Joint Stock Company, said COVID-19 has forced nearly 70 percent of food and beverage businesses to focus on the digital transformation for survival and development, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
Many businesses have built modern technology processes in production and management. Food and beverage companies have also sped up investment activities to renovate the distribution system and adjust the proportion between traditional and modern trading channels. They develop applications to enhance the customer experience when shopping and innovate packaging design, eco-branding and product line development.
Nguyen Dang Quang, chairman of Masan Group, said the COVID-19 pandemic is a good opportunity to promote e-commerce.
The group is building plans to attract more and more people to online shopping, he said.
Vinh said food and beverage businesses need to focus on strategies such as revenue growth, market development, promotion of research and improving product quality. They should also diversify supply sources with priority for domestic suppliers and develop online distribution channels on e-commerce platforms.
According to experts in the food and beverage industry, the stable macroeconomy and commitments in free trade agreements signed between Vietnam and its partners such as the European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) would bring export opportunities and more foreign investment. They would promote the transfer of technology and technological advancement in the industry.
Along with that, the food and beverage companies need to improve their competitiveness and increase investment in infrastructure systems and modernisation of production processes and corporate governance./.
