Businesses are working to ensure there is adequate supply of goods for Tet, especially of essential goods such as meat and rice. (Photo: nld.com.vn)
Ho Chi Minh City's Department of Industry and Trade recently announced plans for its annual market stabilisation programme to ensure adequate supply of essential goods for a month each before and after the festival.
Demand for items such as drinks and confectionery is expected to spike by 20 percent during Tet, while wholesale markets may need to stock 80 percent more flowers than normal to meet demand.
Besides increasing production, companies are also working on launching new products and business models. For instance, Ba Huan Joint Stock Company will produce more varieties of processed goods for Tet, while Vinamit Joint Stock Company is focusing on working with online distributors and launching new nutritious vegetable and fruit drinks by the end of the year.
According to the department, large retailers are set to stock goods two or three times as in normal months though most are reluctant to announce their exact business plans for Tet.
Due to negative factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and flood in central Vietnam, demand during next year's Tet might be lower than normal, many businesses feared.
They need to utilise online channels and spend more on marketing and promotions, they say.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has called on province and city authorities across the country to monitor local production and business plans, have plans in place to deal with potential market anomalies and keep an eye on the market to ensure a steady supply of essential goods and those covered by price stabilisation programmes./.

|Exporters advised to further tap into European market||Exporters advised to further tap into European market|
Vietnamese exporters should further exploit the 28-member European Union to increase their market share in the promising region, Vietnam Trade Counsellor in Germany Bui Vuong Anh has said.
Illustrative image (Source: VNA)
Addressing a conference on trade promotion to the European market held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) held on November 25, he noted that Vietnam's exports account for only 2 percent of European imports.
Major exports from Vietnam with advantages in the market include agricultural and aquatic products, processed foods, footwear, garments and textiles, and some high value-added product categories, such as electrical products, electronics, telephones, equipment, and machinery.
Anh said there is still room for Vietnamese exporters and advised enterprises to optimise their advantages in agricultural and aquatic products, garments and textiles, and footwear to quickly increase market share in the region. For seafood products, enterprises should pay attention to origin warnings. He added that the EU is now increasing the frequency of checks on seafood exports from Vietnam.
The EU has 28 members but exports from Vietnam primarily go to just a few countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, and Austria.
That enterprises only focus on a few markets puts them at risk, especially when the market experiences fluctuations, as it did from COVID-19. It is therefore necessary to consider expanding market share throughout the region. According to a representative of the trade office in Sweden, Vietnamese enterprises could immediately expand their market share in northern Europe, and products with great potential include garments for women, seafood, footwear, unroasted coffee beans, and unshelled cashew nuts./.

Used for temperature measuring equipment such as cars, OA equipment and home appliances. According to representatives of the company, up to this point, the Vietnamese economy is flourishing after the epidemic thanks to very effective disease prevention and control. Businesses also benefit from this.
Production worker at the factory Semitec Electronics Company
Ms. Huynh Thi Thu Ha, representative of the company, said that due to the negative impact from the Covid-19 epidemic in other countries, many orders from member companies in other countries were transferred to Vietnam by the parent company. Because, Vietnam is a brilliant candidate when it is located in the most dynamically developed region in the world and has good disease control. If the time before the epidemic, on average each month, the company only produced from 2.5 to 2.8 million products, now, the company produces 3-3.5 million products/month to meet the demand. customer demand. To be able to meet the orders well for customers, the company has recruited 200 more workers, bringing the total number of workers to more than 570 people. In order to encourage employees to stick and feel secure with their jobs, in addition to the regular benefits they enjoy, workers also receive an increase in salary, currently about 10 million VND/person/ month.
According to Ms. Huynh Thi Thu Ha, at present, in some countries, the epidemic breaks out again, making the production of member companies difficult. Therefore, the company is making more efforts to ensure production, along with overcoming difficulties with the parent company in foreign countries. Therefore, the company is expanding production and business, concentrating resources for development, promoting production, increasing labor productivity to meet market demand.
According to forecasts, the epidemic outbreak is now back in many countries, this is also a good business opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to grasp opportunities. To prepare for the next stage, Ms. Huynh Tuan Phuong Mai shared, An Long Company is promoting the marketing channel of goods, training personnel so that high quality products meet international standards. At the same time, she hopes all levels of authorities will continue to support the company to soon implement the An Nhut Tan Industrial Cluster project in order to expand, increase capacity and invest deeply to create valuable products, better serve consumers, contribute to the economic growth of the province.

Boosting support for Vietnamese enterprises to capitalise on free trade agreements (FTAs) and engage more deeply in global supply chains is an important solution to fuel post-pandemic exports and economic recovery, the Export Forum 2020 held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 18 heard.
Experts shre opinions at the Export Forum 2020 on November 18 (Photo: VNA)
Pointing out the challenges facing exports, participants cited the World Bank (WB) as saying that the COVID-19 crisis has had an unprecedented impact on matters such as healthcare, the economy, and society around the world, while at the same time worsening protectionism.
Growing automation and the withdrawal of many countries from global value chains may make it hard for processing and manufacturing and export strategies to prove effective in emerging markets and developed economies, according to the WB.
It also held that although Vietnam has an open economy, its participation in global and regional value chains remains modest and much lower than that of ASEAN countries like Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Vietnam created just 20.4 billion USD in 2018 via its involvement in value chains, ranking 53rd among 174 economies. Its participation in complex stages of those chains also remains low.
Nguyen Huu Tin, Director of the HCM City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), cited the World Development Report 2020 as showing that Vietnam's engagement in value chains is currently at the "limited processing-manufacturing" level.
The country should move to higher levels in value chains to improve productivity, he said.
Vice Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Le Thanh Liem said the city's trading activities have greatly contributed to the trade revenue of the country as a whole, noting that its exports have increased 10 percent annually on average for many years, with industrial products accounting for over 80 percent of total revenue.
He acknowledged, however, that the impact of COVID-19 and continual changes in trade trends in many regions have considerably affected the city's exports.
Therefore, assisting businesses to access market information, join global supply chains, and raise localisation rates in export items are among the city's top priorities for sustaining export growth and shoring up its economy, Liem added.
Tin said the ITPC has been actively carrying out programmes to help enterprises capitalise on advantages generated by FTAs and promote Vietnam's involvement in global supply chains.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of face-to-face support activities, the centre has provided assistance online to update companies about market information and help them seek partners.
Knowledge about FTAs, especially the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), has also been disseminated via different forms, to help businesses make use of the preferential treatment offered under those trade deals, he noted.
Echoing this, Pham Thiet Hoa, General Director of the Saigon Agriculture Corporation, pointed to the need to optimise the advantages brought about by new-generation FTAs in order to boost the participation of Vietnamese agricultural products in global supply chains, saying these agreements feature preferential tariffs on such commodities.
Many experts at the forum suggested the stronger application of modern technologies and equipment in production, the diversification of products and markets, greater connectivity with partners in supply chains, the optimisation of logistics services, and brand building, all of which should be implemented immediately to raise revenue and sustainability in Vietnam's export sector./.

The lists cover several sub-sectors, such as international forwarding, warehouse services, and third- and fourth-party logistics; freight transport; port operations; and rapid delivery and last-mile delivery.
The top 10 businesses in international forwarding, warehouse services, and third- and fourth-party logistics are the Gemadept JSC, the Indo Tran Logistics Corporation, the DHL Global Forwarding (Vietnam) Corporation, the Transimex JSC, the Expeditors Vietnam Co. Ltd, the Schenker Vietnam Co. Ltd, the Kuehne Nagel Co. Ltd, the Bee Logistics JSC, the South Logistics JSC, and the Vinafreight JSC.
The rankings were compiled based on companies' financial capacity, as reflected in their financial reports; media reputation, as assessed by media coding methods that encode articles about companies on influential media channels; and interviews with relevant parties conducted in October and November.
Vietnam Report General Director Vu Dang Vinh said that after decades of globalisation, the world is now more inter-connected than ever, opening up huge opportunities for global trade and promoting the development of supply chains.
However, he also noted that greater connectivity poses problems in supply chains in general and the logistics sector, the backbone of supply chains, in particular, when sudden shocks like COVID-19 strike.
The Vietnam Logistics Business Association reported that, in March, 15 percent of logistics companies posted a year-on-year revenue decline of 50 percent, and over half of all companies experienced a decline of 10-30 percent in the number of domestic and international logistics services provided compared to the same period last year.
The containment of COVID-19 helped Vietnamese businesses, including logistics companies, resume activities fairly quickly. A Vietnam Report survey shows that the operational capacity of 87 percent of interviewed companies in October and November was equivalent to 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels./.

|Hi-tech application in agricultural production maintained in drought and saline season||Hi-tech application in agricultural production maintained in drought and saline season|
Over the past time, promoting high-tech application in agricultural production helped many households in Long An province develop production and improve their incomes. Especially, the application of high technology also helps farmers maintain production, mitigate losses and create profits under the current drought and saline conditions.
High-tech vegetable production brings stable income in drought and saline season
Creating income, reducing production costs
According to Head of Tan Tru Division of Agriculture and Rural Development - Doan Van Hoang, implementing Resolution No.08-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on developing hi-tech agriculture associated with restructuring agricultural sector, Tan Tru district Party Committee issued Resolution No.07 on developing hi-tech agriculture, in which, it chose 3 crops (rice, vegetables, dragon fruits) and 1 animal (cow). Up to now, the district has implemented 5 models of rice applying high technology with a total area of 250 hectares, 2 vegetable models of with an area about 1 hectare in Lac Tan commune and 20 hectares of dragon fruit grown under GAP standards, concentrated in the communes of Lac Tan and Que My Thanh, Binh Tinh, etc. Particularly for beef cattle, the implementation still faces many difficulties due to capital and breeding animals.
"Due to the severe saline intrusion this year, many areas of winter-spring rice lacked fresh water, leading to serious losses. Most of the damaged rice areas are located in low-land communes, where it is difficult to access fresh water and most sowing does not follow the agricultural sector's recommendations that the risk of drought and salinity comes soon. As for the rice areas applying high technology that has been harvested and achieved high yields, farmers have a profit of 25-30 million VND per hectare. The models of growing hi-tech vegetable and dragon fruit in the district are still maintained. Most models use well water and irrigation and drainage systems to maintain production" - Mr. Hoang added.
Director of the Khoi Nguyen Organic Fresh Vegetables Cooperative (in hamlet 5, Lac Tan commune) - Nguyen Viet Thinh said: "Since it was established, vegetables are grown entirely from organic fertilizers, so the quality of vegetables is always guaranteed and favored by consumers. Normally, the total area of vegetables and fruit of the cooperative is 5.4 hectares, providing tons of vegetables, tubers and fruits to the market every month. However, many members are unable to take initiative in the water source for production due to the current drought and salinity conditions, so the production area is reduced to about 1.5 hectares. Currently, all 1.5 hectares of these vegetables are grown in net houses and use treated well water to irrigate".
It is currently known that the cooperative mainly grows water spinach to supply the market. The water spinach price is also high, from 10,000 to 12,000 VND per kilo. With this price, growers have an income of 500,000-800,000 VND per day.
Drought and salinity have lasted for months, causing significant impacts on irrigation and the development of dragon fruits in Tan Tru district. However, some dragon fruit areas thanks to hi-tech applications in production should still maintain well. Mr. Le Thanh Nam, who lives in Binh Tinh commune, shared: "Last time, my family applied high technology to produce over 1.2 hectares of dragon fruits. In general, hi-tech production helps dragon fruit to grow well, less pests and diseases. At the same time, the economical watering system reduces the pressure on the irrigation water source in the current drought and salinity season, but it still ensures that the dragon fruit can grow and develop normally".
According to professional evaluation, saving irrigation model not only helps farmers save 80 percent of labor (watering, fertilizing), saving electricity, water usage, and so on, but it also improves high profit is about 2.5-5 million VND per hectare.
Water-saving irrigation systems help farmers reduce production costs
Maintaining production during the drought and saline season
In Thanh Hoa district, it has built a planning area of 2,000 hectares of rice applying high technology in 3 communes of Tan Tay, Thuy Dong and Thanh An to implement the Project on developing hi-tech agriculture of the province. In addition, the district also expanded 300 hectares of rice applying high technology in 3 communes of Tan Dong, Thuy Tay and Thanh Phuoc. Up to now, the district has implemented 2,041 out of 2,000 hectares of hi-tech rice, reaching 102 percent compared to the Resolution of the Provincial Party Committee. In addition, the district has 77 cooperative teams for agricultural production, 11 cooperatives, including 5 cooperatives and 4 cooperative teams in the area of hi-tech rice.
According to the Vice Chairman of Thanh An commune People's Committee - Mai Van Thao, the commune was planned to implement the Program of hi-tech agriculture on rice until 2020 with 1,200 hectares. Up to now, the total area of 1,233 hectares was implemented, reaching 102.8 percent of the Resolution of the District Party Committee. The whole commune has 1 cooperative and 5 collaborative teams to produce hi-tech rice. At present, farmers in the commune have sown Summer-Autumn crop for nearly 20 days with an area of over 1,600 hectares, of which about 300 hectares of hi-tech rice. To support the people, the commune People's Committee coordinated with the District Center for Agricultural Service to regularly measure the salinity of canals in the area every 2 days to timely capture the situation and provide information to the people.
The leader of cooperative team 9, in hamlet 3, Thanh An commune - Nguyen Thanh Xuan shared that all members of the cooperative team have sown the Summer-Autumn crop for about 20 days with the main rice variety of OM4625. People are presently very interested in the situation of drought and salinity. However, the land with the special feature that is less affected by drought and salinity, people still bravely sow and apply all steps towards organic production to ensure rice quality.
"Cooperative team has had 32 members with about 110 hectares of rice in the planning area of growing hi-tech rice since 2018. The cooperative team has been supported to flatten the field and use organic fertilizer, etc. Besides, it was also encouraged to implement the models such as reducing the number of sowing seeds, "1 must, 5 decreases", "1 must, 6 decreases" and eco-technology. Thereby, they help farmers increase profits in production and contribute to environmental protection " - Mr. Xuan added.
Head of Divison of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa district - Nguyen Kinh Kha said: "At present, a part of an area of about 10 hectares in 2 communes of Tan Dong and Tan Tay of the district is also affected by drought and salinity. Although the impact is not significant, this situation still continues in a long time, the risk of the district agricultural production is also greatly affected. The water source for producing hi-tech rice in Thanh An commune is mainly from Bac Dong canal (a branch of Tien river), so the salinity is still low, ranging from 0.3-0.5 grams per liter. In addition, the room also has a plan in case drought and salinity occur in the district. Accordingly, if the salinity level shows signs of increasing near the permitted level, the department will propose the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to temporarily close Ca Tom channel (adjacent to Tan Thanh district) to store fresh water, ensuring for production, minimize damage to farmers"./.

With the theme, the UNWTO aims to highlight the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities in rural areas and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world.
Vietnam's tourism sector is building a thorough recovery plan in keeping with market trends. A survey on demands and consumption trend of Vietnamese tourists is underway.
Meanwhile, the VNAT is preparing for another tourism stimulus targeting domestic holidaymakers as the pandemic has been brought under control.
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said that the World Tourism Day is a chance to recognise the role tourism outside major cities and its ability to build a better future for all.
"All around the world, tourism empowers rural communities, providing jobs and opportunity, most notably for women and youth. Tourism also enables rural communities to hold onto their unique cultural heritage and traditions, and the sector is vital for safeguarding habitat and endangered species," he added.
For numerous rural communities around the world, tourism is a leading provider of employment and opportunities. In many places, it is one of the few viable economic sectors, offering young people a chance to earn a living without having to migrate either within their home countries or abroad.
Communities in rural areas also struggle with impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These communities are usually much less-prepared to deal with the short- and longer-term impact of the crisis, and tourism offers a solution to all of these challenges.
For the first time in the 40-year history of the World Tourism Day, the official celebration will not be hosted by a single nation. Instead, five nations of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, with Chile joining with observer status, will serve as joint hosts.
This co-hosting agreement exemplifies the spirit of international solidarity that runs through tourism./.
