Thu Thua is newly divided into two regions: the North region consists of 7 communes of Long Thanh, Long Thuan, Tan Thanh, My Lac, My Thanh, Long Thanh, Tan Lap belonging to Dong Thap Muoi Region and the remaining is located in the flood region (accounting for 75% of the total district), the South consists of the remaining communes and less impacted by the floods. The socio-economic development of Thua Thua district is closely linked with the reclamation, immigration and construction of a new economic region of the province.
According to the geographical and economic region classification of Long An province, the North of Thua Thua district belongs to sub-zone IV (including Thanh Hoa, North Thua Thua and a part of Tan Thanh district). The key economic development direction of the district is developing agriculture-forestry in which the leading is rice production and indigo planting. The South of Thu Thua belongs to Sub-zone V (including Tan Tru, Chau Thanh, Tan An city, South Thu Thua, West Vam Co Dong of Ben Luc). The main production direction is producing high productivity rice and special rice, diversifying the crops on the rice-planting land, strongly developing animal breeding such as: pig, industrial chicken, walking chicken, beef and dairy cow.
Thua Thua district consists of 13 communes-town in which Thu Thua town is the center of the district and the remaining communes include Long Thanh, Long Thuan, My Lac, My Thanh, My An, My Phu, Tan Thanh, Binh An, Binh Thanh, Nhi Thanh, Long Thanh (newly established according to the Decree No. 50/2003/NĐ-CP issued by the Government on the basis of splitting from Long Thanh commune), Tan Lap (separated from Tan Thanh commune).
